Compass browser extension: privacy
Last updated 8 October 2026.
Compass is an investment firm's internal record of the companies it meets. The Compass browser extension shows, beside the website you are on, whether that company is in Compass and what Compass holds about it. It is for the firm's own staff and works only with a sign-in from the firm.
What the extension keeps on your computer
- Your sign-in session.
- A list of fingerprints (hashes) of the websites of companies Compass holds, so that matching happens on your computer.
- The panel's own settings, such as where you dragged the label.
What the extension sends to Compass
- When you sign in: your email address, to Compass's sign-in service, and the code it sends you back.
- When you are on the website of a company Compass holds: a request for that company's record, by its Compass id or, where Compass knows the company only from a mention, by the website's domain. Compass also refreshes that company's record, at most once a day.
- Notes you type and reminders you set in the panel.
What the extension never sends
The addresses of pages Compass does not hold, the content of any page, cookies, forms or anything you type on a website. The extension reads the address of the current tab only to check it against the fingerprint list on your computer, and the small label it places on a matched company's website reads nothing from that page.
Where the data lives
In Compass's own database, run by the firm on Supabase, under the same access rules as the Compass website. Nothing is sold or shared with anyone outside the firm, and nothing is used for any purpose other than showing you Compass.
